Catalogue Sensing Interdependence Out Now

Sensing Interdependence accompanies the exhibition presented at de Appel, Amsterdam (27 June–10 August 2025) and offers the first comprehensive publication dedicated to the work of A4C–Arts For The Commons, the platform founded by Ecuadorian artist Rosa Jijón and Italian activist and researcher Francesco Martone.

Working at the intersection of contemporary art, political ecology, and activism, A4C investigates some of the most urgent challenges of our time: human mobility, borders, environmental justice, the commons, and the Rights of Nature. Bringing together artistic research, documentation, archives, critical mapping, and collective action, their practice explores how art can become a tool for imagining alternative forms of governance, care, and coexistence.

Edited by Aria Spinelli, the volume features new essays by Angelo Castucci, Ashley Dawson, Aria Spinelli, and Eszter Szakàcs, alongside drawings and diagrams by Kolxoz Collettive. Richly illustrated, the publication traces nearly a decade of A4C's collaborative practice across Europe, Latin America, and the Mediterranean, revealing how artistic production can contribute to reclaiming the commons and forging new relationships between people, territories, and the more-than-human world.

Published as part of the Italian Council–supported project developed by Joint Cultural Initiatives and hosted by de Appel, Sensing Interdependence is both an exhibition catalogue and a critical reader on contemporary artistic practice, offering new perspectives on ecological justice, political imagination, and collective futures.
